| Cuba’s oldest hotel, the establishment first opened its doors to the public around 1860, some years after the first telegraphic station was created in the country (the property’s name may in fact have been inspired by this). Moved to its present location in 1888, by around 1914 the hotel rooms and restaurant boasted telephones that afforded guests both national and international services, at a time when even public restrooms were a rare and novel luxury.
The creation of a third floor in 2001, when the hotel officially re-opened for business, marks the culmination not only of restoration efforts begun in the late 90s but also of the vertical expansion of the building, which was originally one-storey high. Standing at the intersection of Prado and Neptuno, the hotel is a short walk away from the seawall, close to several and renowned places of interest in Old Havana – the Capitolio is practically next door – and well located for an exploration of the colonial part of the city. Inside, only the high ceilings and supporting arches offer an inkling of the establishment’s past: the lobby, re-done in a colorful, eclectic style and tastefully appointed with modern furnishings, has the feel of modish art gallery. The style carries over to the large snack bar, where the remains of tall, brick arches (retained from the original structure) contrast artfully with the newer décor. The spacious rooms, too, have been modernized and are comfortably appointed (only some have the preserved remains of original walls). Though the hotel guest list includes a number of interesting personalities and figures (such as archeologist Heinrich Schliemann, credited with the discovery of the city of Troy), the privileged location and robust facilities (including a classy restaurant) will likely be more appealing to guests than the establishment’s history. © 2008 Cuba Travel Network. Standard Room... from €77
The Telégrafo’s 54 standard rooms are spacious and share in the modern décor of the rest of the hotel. The color scheme is warm and lively, a feel which is enhanced by the abundant light let in by the large windows. The bathrooms are also modern and well appointed. Couples might wish to book one of the 7 rooms with matrimonial beds, and groups should try and secure a connective set (there are 2 sets per floor). 5 rooms in each floor face the inner courtyard where the snack bar is located and have restored sections of the hotel’s original walls. Only street-facing rooms on the first floor have balconies.
|
|
Mini-Suite Room... from €103
Extra space and comfortable sitting rooms (and an additional bathroom) are the perks which put the Telégrafo’s Mini Suites slightly above the standards. All are street-facing and 3 are fitted with Jacuzzis.

A short walk down Prado takes you to the seawall and a magnificent view of the lighthouse. On Neptuno, there’s no shortage of taxis bound for Vedado and beyond. |

GUEST REVIEWS: 1-2 OF 10
Guest Rating: ![]() Havana: Telegrafo Hotel Reviews: "Excellent Stay" User Habaguanex Hotels.com user, canada - Date posted: Thursday, October 29, 2009 I had an excellent stay at the Hotel Telegrafo in October, 2009. The room was clean and spacious. and everything worked. The air-conditioned was glorious. Staff was helpful and friendly. There was enough of a selection at the breakfast buffet to put together a decent breakfast: juice, omelet, toast, jam, fresh fruit, cold cuts and cheese, cereals, hard-boiled eggs, salads, pasta dishes, hot meats, a variety of breads, delicious pastries, and coffee or tea. The location is perfect: close to the Gran Teatro where I saw two ballets, the Capitolio and it's walking distance to the Malecon and all the sites of Old Havana. The street level outdoor patio is a great place to have a drink and watch Havana in the evening. |
