This story begins in the early 16th century, when the first Spanish schooners sailed the waters of Havana Bay, named Puerto de Carenas by don Sebastián de Ocampo, and Habaguanex was the Indian chief that ruled over the territory where the city of San Cristobal de La Habana is now located. Five centuries later, and honouring its origins, the tourism company that operates the Historical Centre of Old Havana bears the emblematic name of the Indian chief - Habaguanex S.A. The company was formed in 1994 to generate the resources for restoring the magic and splendour of the oldest part of Cuba’s capital city.
